Day Tours Ephesus – A Journey Through Ancient Legends
“Empress of Ionia, renowned Ephesus, famous for war and learning.”
This line from the Greek Anthology reflects the glory of ancient Ephesus. On our day tours Ephesus, you’ll walk where heroes and poets once lived.
Ephesus, or Ephesos in Ancient Greek, was founded by Ionian Greeks. They arrived around 1000 BC on Anatolia’s west coast, later called Ionia.
The city soon became a powerful port and cultural center. It was known for trade, learning, and religion—especially the cult of Artemis. It also became one of the twelve cities in the Ionian League.
Ephesus Before the Greeks
The Ephesus area was already populated during the Neolithic Age, around 6200 BC. Archaeological finds at Ayasuluk Citadel prove that.
Later, during the Bronze Age, it was part of the Mycenaean culture (1500–1400 BC). This shows the site was active long before Greek settlement.
The legend says Androklos, son of King Kodros of Athens, founded Ephesus. He led Ionian settlers and drove away local tribes like the Carians and Lelegians. Some say those people were actually Lydians.
You can explore these legends on your day tour Ephesus.
The Temple of Artemis
One of the most famous places in Ephesus is the Temple of Artemis. It was considered one of the Seven Wonders of the Ancient World.
Originally, it was a shrine for the Anatolian mother goddess Kybele. Later, the Greeks transformed it into a grand temple for Artemis.
The first large temple was completed in 550 BC. A second, even larger one, was built in the early 3rd century BC.
The temple faced destruction several times through history. Its final fall came in 401 AD, reportedly destroyed by a Christian mob. This was led by Saint John Chrysostom, according to some ancient sources. You can explore its ruins and imagine its past glory on our sightseeing Turkey tours.
