Furthermore, stone inscriptions confirm that Emperor Trajan visited Ephesus between 102 and 104 AD. The people of Ephesus built the fountain to honor his visit. Its design featured two levels of columns around a large basin on three sides. The pool itself measured approximately 12 meters by 5 meters in size.
From the main basin water then flowed into a smaller pool, where citizens collected it for daily use. The marble fountain’s main structure stood about 9.5 meters high. At its centre stood a giant statue of Emperor Trajan. Unfortunately, on the statues’s feet remain today.
In addition to the emperor’s statue , several nearby statues represented members of the Imperial family, Dionysus, and other Roman figures. An inscription also explains that Tiberius Claudius Aristion had built the fountain and dedicated it to Goddess Artemis and Emperor Trajan.

Discoveries and Restoration
During archaeological work in 1957 the Trajan Fountain appeared. Subsequently, a team restored it in 1962, using original materials where possible.
