Daily Ephesus Tours – Discover the Grand Theatre

People have lived in this valley since 5000 BC. But the city you see today began in the 3rd century BC, when a general named Lysimachus moved Ephesus to this spot. He served under Alexander the Great himself. Lysimachus planned the city using ideas from Hippodamus of Miletus, one of history’s first city planners. Many believe he even chose the hillside where the Great Theatre would rise.

Walk in his footsteps on an expert-led private Ephesus tours.

Structure of the Theatre

The Great Theatre isn’t just built — it’s cut straight into the slope of Mount Pion. It started small. In the late 3rd century BC, builders raised a single tier of seats and a simple stage. It stayed that way for almost 200 years.

Then Rome arrived. Around 40 AD, Emperor Claudius’s workers enlarged the seating and rebuilt the stage. Nero became emperor in 54 AD and pushed the work even further, adding eight new rooms to the stage. They finished the job by 66 AD.

The biggest changes came between 87 and 92 AD, under Emperor Domitian. Workers built a grand two-story front for the stage. They closed the open side halls to create covered entrances. Using strong supports and thick walls, they added a whole new tier of seats. Before 262 AD, they even added a third floor to the stage. By then, the theatre could hold 25,000 people.

Daily Ephesus Tours – Earthquakes and Repairs

Between 359 and 366 AD, earthquakes tore through the theatre and destroyed the upper seats. Decades later, Emperor Arcadios sent repair crews, but even they couldn’t save the top tier. It stayed empty from then on. The man behind the repairs, Proconsul Messalinus, still has his name carved in stone today.

By the 8th century AD, the theatre had a new job: defending the city as part of its walls.
